Dr. Gerald Gyorffy
For as long as I can remember, animals have always been a part of my life. I was about 7 years old when I decided that I wanted to be a veterinarian. As a teen, growing up in the greater Toronto area, we had a pet cat that actually followed me home from school one day. Once I finished high school, I went off to the University of Guelph to pursue my goal of becoming a veterinarian. After 9 years of University, I graduated with a BSc in Zoology and my Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree. My wife and I had a few pets through my school years ranging from fish and birds to a tabby cat that we adopted from the University. I joined Mitchell Animal Hospital right after graduating in 1995. Over the years I have been blessed with meeting thousands of people and their pets. I think the one thing that really hits home for me, is seeing the young kids that I knew back when I graduated coming in with pets and kids of their own now.
In 2011 and 2012, I decided to broaden my abilities and started attending certification courses for Canine Physical Rehabilitation. After about 125 hours in the classroom and 40 hours at an externship placement, I am now also a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Therapist.
Currently, I enjoy snowboarding and have my level 1 instructor certification. I spend lots of time at the local arenas with my figure skating daughters and enjoy weekend paintball matches with my son. My wife and I have 2 dogs named Maya and Sushi and 4 cats named Aladar, Disney, Manga and Moxie. I recently took an interest in salt water aquariums and currently have a 180 gallon tank with lots of weird and wonderful sea creatures.

I graduated as a veterinarian and joined Mitchell Animal Hospital in 2010 after completing an honours Bachelor degree and a Master’s Degree in Applied Animal Behaviour. After a 2.5 year detour, I am thrilled to be welcomed back into the Mitchell Animal Hospital family.
I grew up enjoying sports and the arts and I focused on music and dance until my early adulthood. I did, however, grow up with a family who owned many pets - most were rescues and many of whom I played on my parent’s heartstrings to bring home. I’m not sure when it was that I decided to be a veterinarian. Perhaps it was when I convinced my lifelong feline-phobic mum to fall in love with Robbie the black tabby cat who was left in a cardboard box, or maybe it was when one particularly decrepit abandoned dog who I brought home bit my father so hard that he lost the use of his hand for some time. Nevertheless, I quickly realized that the true constant throughout my life was the love and compassion I felt for animals and the need to be good at more than just bringing them home.
I also enjoy traveling and learning about other cultures. A Brit by blood and upbringing, I lived most of my teenage years in the Cayman Islands and have explored the Caribbean, Europe, Australia and parts of the Middle East. I have also been known to find myself in places such as Korea with only a suitcase and a smile, or backpacking South Africa helping capture and rehabilitate wildlife and implement anti-poaching techniques.
My hobbies include participating on veterinary-related committees, photography, volleyball, walking my dogs, cupcake decorating, and convincing myself I can play guitar remotely well. Having recently moved to Elora with my husband, bouncy, life-loving dogs and incredible baby boy, I find myself spending all the time that I can just enjoying my family in this beautiful town.

I always knew from a very young age that I wanted to be a Veterinarian. I grew up loving all animals big and small. Growing up my family always had at least one cat and dog. I also developed a love for horses and enjoyed horseback riding throughout my elementary and high school years. After high school I received a BScH in Animal Biology from the University of Guelph, and then attended the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) where I received my Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.
I am very excited to be a part of the Mitchell Animal Hospital team. My family always brought our cats and dogs to Mitchell, and I remember going to the clinic as a young girl. My first experience working in a clinic was when I completed my high school co-op placement right here at Mitchell! I also gained experience and observed surgeries here during my undergrad degree before applying to the OVC. Following graduation I worked in Woodstock and briefly in Cambridge before joining the Mitchell Animal Hospital family.
When I am not at work I am spending time with my husband and our rescue kitty Winky, as well as my family, friends and young nieces. Some of my hobbies include going to the gym, biking, playing Slo-Pitch and baking. This summer I will be attempting my first “Try-a-Tri” triathlon with my sister.
